Clinical Elective Program

The University of Tokyo Faculty of Medicine offers clinical electives for medical students from our affiliated universities and for a limited number of medical students from unaffiliated universities. All international clinical elective students must be in their final year of study in medical school during their elective at UTokyo .

Please note that our office is not responsible for arranging clinical training or research opportunities for international graduate students or health professionals.

Students from affiliated universities: To begin the application process, please ask the elective coordinator at your university to inform us when you have been nominated for study at UTokyo.

Students from unaffiliated universities:  Students from unaffiliated universities who are interested in a clinical elective should carefully review the application instructions. The application portal for electives beginning in July through September 2025 is now open, here, and will remain open until 17:00 JST on 9 December. Please complete the application form and upload all the required documents at one time. Processing of partial applications may be delayed.

Students who pass the initial screening will be notified by email by 16 December.

Important information

• A complete immunization record must be submitted at least sixty days before the start of a clinical rotation.
• Our office is unable to serve as, or find, a guarantor on visa applications for visiting students.
