Clinical Elective Program

The University of Tokyo Faculty of Medicine offers clinical electives for medical students from our affiliated universities and for a limited number of medical students from unaffiliated universities. All visiting clinical elective students must be in their final year of study in medical school during all rotations at UTokyo.

Please note that our office is not responsible for arranging clinical training or research opportunities for visiting graduate students or health professionals.

Students from affiliated universities: To begin the application process, please ask the elective coordinator at your university to inform us when you have been nominated for study at UTokyo.

Students from unaffiliated universities: Students from unaffiliated universities who are interested in a clinical elective should carefully review the application instructions. Information on the clinical departments in the University of Tokyo Hospital is available here.

The application portal for rotations starting during the period from 5 October through 21 December 2026 will open on 2 March 2026. Please note that applications are no longer being accepted for rotations starting before 5 October 2026.

Students who have submitted successful applications for rotations starting in July through September 2026 will be notified by 22 December. Because of the large number of applications we receive, we regret that we are unable to contact unsuccessful applicants.

Questions may be addressed to oiaa+electives@m.u-tokyo.ac.jp.

Notes

  • A complete immunization record must be submitted at least sixty days before the start of a clinical rotation.
