SCHOLARSHIPS FOR SELF-FINANCED INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

The University of Tokyo Graduate School of Medicine offers scholarship assistance to deserving current and prospective self-financed international students. There are two types of scholarships: those for which you may apply directly and those that require the recommendation of the University of Tokyo.

1. Applications for Direct Scholarships

E-mail the Office of International Academic Affairs (OIAA) at oiaa+scholarships*m.u-tokyo.ac.jp, if you need a letter of recommendation from the Dean of the Graduate School of Medicine (replace * with @ when typing the e-mail address). The letter will be issued in seven to ten days. Please check the foundation’s instructions for details on their exact requirements.

2. Applications for Scholarships Requiring a University Recommendation

Private foundation scholarships for self-financed international students are awarded by means of a system in which the university recommends candidates who have been selected in an internal selection process. The university uses the Application Form for Scholarships from Private Foundations to collect information from students and decide who is deserving of a recommendation. These scholarships are referred to as university-recommended scholarships.

【Application procedure for a scholarship requiring a university recommendation】

Before you start

・You cannot decline a university-recommended scholarship. Therefore, do not apply if you are unsure if you can accept the scholarship, as refusal will adversely affect your standing and that of the university.

・Applications must be submitted online at (https://OIAA Application System.

Step 1: Registering the Application Form for Scholarships from Private Foundations and other required documents

Use the application portal to upload the required documents during the registration period, which is 1 February to 30 April. Students who start in autumn can register after their enrollment.

A detailed explanation is available here.

Step 2: Review scholarship information

Information on potential scholarships is available on the OIAA website (https://koryu.mu-tokyo.ac.jp/scholarships/?lang=en). Please carefully review the application guidelines to confirm scholarship conditions, eligibility requirements, and documents to be submitted to the foundation.

Step 3: Apply

On the OIAA application portal (https://OIAA Application System), select your desired private foundation scholarship and press the Apply button. Application deadlines are posted on the OIAA website and are strictly observed.

Step 4: Selection by the Graduate School of Medicine

Candidates are selected by a committee of faculty members on the basis of information provided in the documents submitted in Step 1 (Application Form for Scholarships from Private Foundations and other documents). Some scholarships may require an in-person or online interview, and you may be asked to give a presentation on your research and achievements.

Step 5: Result of selection process

You will be notified of the selection results by e-mail approximately one week after the OIAA Application Deadline. Please be sure to monitor your e-mail account during this time and to inform us in advance if you will be outside Japan or unable to check your e-mail for an extended period. If you do not respond by the specified date, we may cancel your recommendation.

Step 6: Submit foundation-designated documents

If you are selected by the Graduate School of Medicine, you must submit the additional requested documents by the OIAA deadline for foundation-designated documents. In general, all documents must be prepared by this deadline, but the required documents and timing vary by scholarship, so please follow the instructions on our website.

Step 7: Receiving the examination results

After being recommended by the Graduate School of Medicine and submitting the additional documents, you may undergo further review by the university. The head office must confirm the eligibility of the recommendation and documents, so please follow any instructions regarding revisions of these documents. After you are recommended by the university, the relevant foundation (or MEXT) will conduct their own selection process. In most cases, selection is based on interviews. The foundation or OIAA will inform you of the final result.

If you have questions about scholarships, please contact the OIAA by using the Contact section on our website.
